Daughter of the Valley
I saw a girl down in the valley
The valley was old and mean to the young
The trail was rugged and thorny
It curved and ran long.
The girl was young, but only her eyes
Her hands were rough and old
They started burning under the bloody skies
Her nails were dark and wild
The hoe in her palm was hot and dry
Still, she held it as she was told.
The days were long and so were the trails.
She got the skin of an old elephant.
Her calloused sole grinded on the hot anvil.
The cuts on her knees cried with their mouths opened.
Her bones were as strong as metal.
The yoke around her head was heavy and tight
She still managed to rub it gently.
The basket that rode her was twice her weight
She still managed to carry and was friendly.
She saw the first sunlight and waited until midnight
She is known as “Daughter of the Valley.”
